PURPOSE:  The primary purpose of this position is to prepare delicious, healthy meals for students according to established recipes, while assisting, inspiring, and mentoring students in a culinary arts program. The Culinary II Cook prepares health-conscious dishes to support and motivate students throughout the school day and ensures a clean, safe, and well-organized kitchen environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The following are examples of duties. However, any one position may not cover all duties listed; examples may not cover all duties an employee is expected to perform; and other duties may be assigned.

• Follows recipe cards and health guidelines to prepare meals for students.
• Sets up workstations with all needed ingredients and cooking equipment prior to meal preparation.
• Prepares ingredients for cooking, including chopping and peeling vegetables, cutting meat, etc.
• Cooks food in various manners utilizing a large range of kitchen equipment.
• Monitor food while cooking to stir, turn, and track time to ensure proper preparation.
• Ensures great presentation by dressing dishes before they are served.
• Monitors and maintains proper food temperature and cleanliness standards during food service.
• Prepares pre-packaged quick serve menu items.
• Prepares foods for catering events associated with the school.
• Maintains a sanitized and orderly environment in the kitchen, in accordance with health department guidelines, at all times.
• Ensures all food and other items are properly labeled and stored.
• Follows FIFO (First In, First Out) rotation for all products.
• Checks the quality of ingredients before and during preparation.
• Alerts supervisor when ingredients are running low or supplies need to be replenished.
• Assists, inspires, and mentors students participating in the culinary arts program.

• Develops job skills necessary to meet changes in the position.
• Meets applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.
• Attends work regularly.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of three years of experience with kitchen prep and cooking required.
• Knowledge and Skills:  Experience using cutting tools, cookware, cooking equipment, and bakeware. Knowledge of various cooking procedures and methods (grilling, baking, boiling, etc.). Ability to follow recipe standards and all sanitation procedures.
• Reasoning Ability:  Ability to follow instructions in cooking and cleanliness. Ability to solve practical problems and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
• Interpersonal Skills:  Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Works well with students, staff, and the public. Ability to mentor and support students in a culinary arts program.
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification. Valid Food Handler’s Card required. Background check required. Other certificates as determined by SVS.
