PURPOSE:  The primary purpose of this position is to deliver engaging, culturally responsive, and standards-aligned instruction in Health and Social Sciences at the high school level (grades 9–12) and Middle school electives (grades 6-8). The teacher builds strong relationships with students and serves as a mentor, advocate, and community partner within the Siletz Valley School community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The following are examples of duties. However, any one position may not cover all duties listed; examples may not cover all duties an employee is expected to perform; and other duties may be assigned.

• Instruction & Curriculum

• Plans and delivers high-quality, culturally responsive lessons in Health and Social Sciences for grades 9–12 and middle school elective options (grades 6-8). 
• Develops and implements curriculum aligned with Oregon state standards and the school’s charter mission.
• Incorporates project-based learning, critical thinking, and real-world application into daily instruction.
• Integrates Indigenous perspectives, Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians history, and local community context where appropriate.
• Supports students in developing research, writing, and oral communication skills across the social sciences.
• May teach courses such as Health, Contemporary Social Issues, Psychology, Sociology, Oregon History, and/or related electives depending on candidate expertise and scheduling needs.

• Student Support & Relationships

• Builds strong, trusting relationships with students, particularly those who are at risk, economically disadvantaged, or from historically underserved communities.
• Differentiates instruction to meet the diverse academic, social-emotional, and cultural needs of all learners.
• Participates in advisory, mentorship, or intervention programs as assigned.
• Collaborates with school administration and support staff to address student wellness and academic success.

• Assessment & Data

• Uses formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and document student progress.
• Maintains accurate records, grades, and communications in the school’s student information system.
• Participates in school-wide data review and improvement planning processes.

• Community & Professional Responsibilities

• Engages proactively with parents, guardians, and tribal community members.
• Collaborates with colleagues across grade levels and departments.
• Participates in professional development, staff meetings, and school events.
• Upholds the school’s mission, policies, and the terms of the charter agreement with Lincoln County School District.

GENERAL PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Performs duties in a courteous and efficient manner that builds the confidence of staff, students, and the public in Siletz Valley School.

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with school personnel, parents, students, and the public; works collaboratively as a team member.
• Carries out work responsibilities effectively under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions, and new or emergency conditions.
• Respects confidential information and the privacy of students, staff, and parents.
• Develops job skills necessary to meet changes in the position.
• Meets applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.
• Attends work regularly.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Education and/or Experience:  Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution. Valid Oregon Teaching License with endorsement(s) in Health and/or Social Sciences (or eligibility to obtain). Demonstrated commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and serving Indigenous and economically disadvantaged youth.
• Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret educational documents including standards, curriculum guides, and professional literature. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with students, families, staff, and community members. Ability to present information clearly before groups of students, parents, and colleagues.
• Reasoning Ability:  Ability to solve practical classroom and school-related problems and exercise sound professional judgment. Ability to respond to a variety of instructional, behavioral, and community situations with flexibility and cultural sensitivity.
• Technology Skills:  Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides). Ability to use student information systems, learning management systems, and standard educational technology tools.
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Valid Oregon Teaching License with Health and/or Social Sciences endorsement (or eligibility to obtain). Ability to pass a criminal background check.
• Interpersonal Skills:  Works effectively with diverse students, families, and community members. Ability to build trusting relationships and maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Demonstrates cultural humility, restorative practices orientation, and commitment to trauma-informed approaches.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience teaching in a rural, tribal, or high-need school setting.
• Experience with restorative practices, trauma-informed teaching, or social-emotional learning.
• Dual-subject endorsement (e.g., Health + Social Studies, or Health + PE).
• Experience with college-readiness or early college programming.
